Slovenian driving theory, explained in English

Most material for the Slovenian theory exam (CPP, short for cestnoprometni predpisi, the road traffic rules) exists only in Slovenian. If you came to Slovenia to work or study, that makes the hardest part of getting a licence even harder. This handbook explains the rules the way our instructors explain them in the car: short, with pictures, in plain English.

It is written by the instructors of Avtošola Tilia, a driving school in Ljubljana that has been preparing candidates for the exam since 1993.

Who it is for

  • Expats, foreign workers and international students who need a Slovenian category B licence
  • Anyone who simply learns better in English than in Slovenian
  • Tilia candidates who want the rules in English alongside the course

What is inside

Right of way

Who goes first at a junction, the right-hand rule and the meeting rule, with drawings of real situations.

Roundabouts

Entering, driving round and leaving a roundabout, and the mistakes that cost points.

Parking

Parallel parking and reverse parking, step by step, the way they are checked on the driving test.

Speed limits and the motorway

The limits in and outside built-up areas, and how to join, drive on and leave the motorway safely.

Setting up the car

Seat, mirrors and controls before you move off, exactly as the examiner expects to see it.

Traffic signs

The signs that confuse most learners, and how far before the danger each one stands.

How it fits the theory exam and the driving test

The handbook teaches you the rules. To pass, you also need to practise exam-style questions and know a few Slovenian terms. In Slovenia the theory exam is taken on a computer in Slovenian; if you do not understand Slovenian well enough, you can take it with a court interpreter that you arrange yourself. Everything about this is in our guide Can you take the Slovenian theory test in English?

For practice in English, use the free CPP tests in English, the traffic sign trainer with all 275 Slovenian signs and the intersection simulator.

How to get the handbook

The handbook is part of Tilia Plus: EUR 19.90 for 90 days, one payment, no subscription. Tilia Plus also unlocks the explanations in the CPP tests, every traffic sign explained, the AI teacher that answers your questions in English, and the video course.

Signed up for a course at Tilia? Then you already have it: the CPP course includes Tilia Plus, and students who drive with us have Tilia Premium with everything included.

Questions about the handbook

Is this the official exam material?

No. It is our own handbook, written by Tilia instructors. The official exam questions are set by the Slovenian Traffic Safety Agency (AVP), and we do not copy them. The handbook explains the rules those questions test.

Can I download it?

Yes. With Tilia Plus you read it here, page by page, and you can also download the PDF.

Is there a printed version?

Not at the moment. It is made for reading on a phone, a tablet or a computer.

Is the handbook also available in Slovenian?

Yes, the same handbook in Slovenian is at CPP priročnik. Tilia Plus includes both.

Is it enough to pass the exam?

It covers the rules that cause the most trouble, but it is a compact handbook, not the whole syllabus. Combine it with the practice tests and, if you can, the CPP course.
