What you need for the exchange

Legal requirements.

First read the text below, which clearly explains whether you can obtain a Slovenian driving licence at all. Then contact us, and we will advise you based on your specific case.

Under Article 61 of the Drivers Act, a valid foreign driving licence may be exchanged for a Slovenian driving licence by a foreigner who, based on a residence permit in the Republic of Slovenia, has had registered residence for more than 6 months.

The same also applies to a Slovenian citizen who returns from abroad to the Republic of Slovenia for permanent residence, or has had registered temporary residence in the Republic of Slovenia for more than 6 months — provided they meet the other conditions laid down by this Act for driving motor vehicles, such as the required age, physical and mental fitness, medical certificate, and similar requirements.

A Slovenian driving licence is issued if the holder of a valid foreign driving licence passes the practical part of the driving test for the vehicle categories they are entitled to drive with their foreign driving licence.
